Blackjack

Keep in mind that all procedures you learn in this video are always subject to change based on your own casino house rules. Always remain flexible as these procedures will change as often as the weather.

There are many different ways to perform an action. Just because someone else tells you they don't do it that way, that doesn't always mean that the way you are doing it or learned it is wrong. At the end of the day, we must do what our floor supervisor tells us to if we agree with it or not.

A blackjack is a 2-card naturally-given total of 21. This will only happen if the player's FIRST 2 CARDS are any 10-value card paired with any Ace. Since the Ace can be valued as 1 or 11 depending on what benefits the hand at the time, this combination will be 21 by default and this is the only time that the player will be entitled to a 6 to 5 or 3 to 2 payout depending on the current pay ratio of the table you are currently dealing on; this is assuming the dealer doesn't also have a blackjack. (The pay ratio of your game will be printed on the table or displayed on a placard on your table).

After the blackjack has been paid, you will immediately remove the player's cards and set them in the discard rack. However; some casinos have a house rule where you will tilt the player's blackjack card that is closest to you (the dealer) at a 45 degree angle and leave the cards on the table after paying them. This is usually the procedure if there is a special type of bonus on your particular game. Your floor supervisor will be certain that you are made aware of the house rules regarding this.

When talking about double-downs, a player may double-down on any of their first 2 original cards. If the player has asked for an additional card, they have forfeited their ability to double down when following conventional blackjack rules. There are a number of blackjack or 21 game variants that allow this, but allowing a late double-down is not considered a standard procedure.

When a player would like to perform a double-down, they must put up additional money next to their main bet that ranges between their original bet and the table minimum. Always follow the rule that the original bet is always on the dealer's left-hand side. If the player has placed any amount less than their original bet for a double-down, we will make the ALERT call, "Double-Down for Less!". Alert calls do not require floor approval. Approval calls do however.

Once you deliver the double-down card to the player, you will lay that additional card at a 90 degree angle to the player's cards ensuring not to cover up too much of the card that lies underneath that double-down card.

Once a player has received their double-down card, they cannot take anymore cards; their turn is over for that hand and we move on to that player's next hand if they chose to split or we will move to the next player for a decision.

Eventually in your dealing career, there will be a player that will want to double-down on their blackjack. Some casinos don't allow this so be sure to consult your dealer manual for your location once you start working there. Once the player indicates that they would like to double-down on a blackjack, you will make an APPROVAL CALL, "Double-Down on Blackjack!" and then wait for your floor approval before continuing. After you receive approval, you will deliver the player's double-down card in the typical fashion and their turn is over; the player will not be permitted to ask for any more cards on that hand. We will proceed to the next player's decision

If a player decides to double-down on a blackjack, you will mainly see this performed on a 6 to 5 table as opposed to a 3 to 2 table for reasons explained in the video course. The player will forfeit their 6 to 5 pay ratio they were originally entitled to and it will become a regular hand of blackjack and they will either lose their bet depending on the outcome of the hand or they will only get paid even money assuming the hand wins.
